Lifestyle Medicine
Recently, a patient of Dr. Fernandez came in for a follow up visit and asked, “Now that my scales show I am in remission, am I now ‘well’?”
He hesitated thinking about the patient's question and responded that although their scales were in the normal range as a result of their treatment, there were still active physical and psychological issues that needed attention for them to be ‘well’, but that they were off to a good start.
In light of that experience, we bring to your attention the new medical concept of Lifestyle Medicine. This is a new area of medicine that highlights six pillars, or areas of your life that are important in achieving wellness. Our office psychiatric RN, Marisa Fernandez, has recently completed a course in this area of health through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), and we include her overview of this new specialty in medicine.
As you read the recommendations, they may seem overwhelming at first. It is so easy to “just not even try.” Dr. Fernandez encourages you strongly, however, to just start by moving ever so slowly in the healthy direction outlined here. Every little bit of effort will help you in achieving a fuller, healthier life. We also plan to feature recipe reviews in our newsletter and website.
Dr. Fernandez is personally working on this agenda as well. As he says, “He want to be the healthiest dying person he can be.”
